Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Economic Sector

Watching some of the sessions of COP27 yesterday was a true eye opener. Tackling the topic of emissions was one that grabbed my attention.

Sadly in the last 20 years – 1990 -2010 we have increased our emissions by 54%!

So what has changed since last year:

1. Russia’s invasion on Ukraine has set inflation on fire.

2. Energy and food prices became inflated

3. The security of global supply chains have become endangered

How did this set-back the environmental agenda ?

Countries were torn between supplying renewable energy or just ‘energy’ to their people, causing them to resort back to fossil-fuel sources to increase fuel security. This has set back the decarbonisation agenda in general.

This has also sparked a debate across many countries blaming the decarbonisation targets on the reasons why fuel prices have gone up.

Political tension has also affected one of the main accomplishments of COP26 in Glasgow and that was the China-US Working group with many bilateral meetings cancelled.

In the meanwhile, Earth is calling for help, the planet’s SOS signals, have been come more evident. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) warned us that without “immediate and deep” emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible to constrain average global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

This is the time to act, and we are all hopes that this COP will help us come #TogetherForImplementation #cop27egypt
